Server Issues
March 10th, 2008 by MarcAs more traffic comes in during the last hours of this round, the server is more likely to go down. I will do my best to bring it back up quickly. As it doesn’t selectively lock out one group or another, it is ‘fair’ although far from ideal obviously. I think I am going to bite the bullet and upgrade the server this week. I will keep everyone posted and thank you for being patient! Good luck!!

Each time the server has gone down this week, even though it was down for the same amount of time for both groups, when the site came back up the Dian Fossey Fund lost at least 200 votes which the USO gained.
If this was not deliberate, it would be in the interests of fairness to extend the voting period to compensate for the period of time lost.
None of us understand how votes can be counted, gained, or lost while the site is down, and this has happened twice now.
While it may seem unfair that there are more people who love animals and wish to help preserve life those who support the military, this is actually the case. In U.S. elections we, the majority, do not have a voice, as the two major parties will not nominate anyone who does not support the continuation, funding, and support for the wars of aggression (crimes against humanity according to the Nuremberg laws).
The situation seems to be the same here on vote4cause. If we get more voters and catch up, the site goes down and comes back up with our votes mysteriously lost. Are you using Diebold machines, Marc?
The length of time the site was down was just enough to preserve the minority’s lead, and I am absolutely certain that if we again catch up, the site will go down and enough of our vote be lost again to ensure that we cannot win. Once is an accident. Twice is deliberate.
We would like the voting time extended to compensate for the down time. And we would like to have the 400 votes we lost when the site went down, 200 votes each time, restored.
Thank you.

I just posted this on the Dian Fossey vote chat page:
One of the stories about this site just made the front page on Care2, and this is the time US people are getting off work. But I’m worried about encouraging people to vote, because accoring to Marc, the more people voting, the more likely the site is to crash, and every time it crashes we lose more votes than we’ve gained.
Seems like a lose/lose situation to me.

This used to be so much fun, but I cannot stand all the fighting anymore. There is so much complaining, I think, in the chat, that some visitors who may otherwise have stayed to vote, have just left after one or two.
I wanted to stay and help the gorillas, but it was too discouraging.
I will help the gorillas in other ways.

Some people suggested that when the server goes down, it comes back up to where the last save was. So why are only votes lost and not chat?

Marc seems to have disabled the avatars so that there would be less strain on the system.
THANKS, MARC!

When we got down to zero seconds left to vote, instead of resetting, the timer started going backwards. Now it is up to 8 minutes.

Hi Marc,
I see the donations from vote4cause have been steady for $10 for a while.
I know at first you wanted to be able to pay the promised amounts to different causes who won before the google-account got frozen.
But I wonder if in time the donations will get higher again? There are even more ads than before, and the votingrounds are longer so I immagine quite some money must be coming in now.
Are you thinking of raising the vote4cause donations soon, or will you keep them at $10?
