Server Switch

April 10th, 2008 by Marc

I switched servers this evening. Everything seemed fine, but there are problems with recognizing the time limit on the voting. I took down the cause pages for voting because you can currently vote as many times as you want without needing to wait. I have been trying to figure out why this is happening, but to no avail. I will try to fix it within 24 hours and if I can’t, I will switch back to the old server until I can figure it out. Sorry for the inconvenience. This move to the new server is the first big step towards improving this site, so please bear with me!

It is getting really late and I finally figured it out. It has to do with reversing the fixes that I implemented when daylights savings came around. Those were make shift fixes that I put in place because the server didn’t change as expected when the time shift came. This new server seems to be on top of that. If you run into any problems with the new server running Vote4Cause, let me know ASAP and I will look into it. Again, sorry for the delay, but we are now running on a server that is dedicated to this site. If this works well, I can start implementing more server demanding features again!

This way of dealing with a server switch during the voting times seems rather unacceptable to me. All US voters were able to vote during their normal voting times. Asean and european voters lost 5 hours of voting. I do not think, it was the target to influence voting decisions. But in any case, the influence is there. Disapointing!!!

I’m in the U.S. and I wasn’t able to vote for at least five hours.

I think the down time was the same length of time for everyone, but everyone is in different time zones.

The chat seems to be telling us that just-posted items were posted one hour ago, with previous items being posted at (1hr - X time) (i.e., 47 mins 35 seconds, or such)

I’m sure it’s another sign of the server switch.

Sorry it’s so much work for you, Marc…but thanks for doing it!

  5. Marc Says:

Thanks Larkia. Should be fixed now. It was the same problem, but I hadn’t applied the fix to the messages.

For me no possibility to log in and to chat. I can vote, but I am not receiving a new password after request.

  7. Marc Says:

CP, send me an email through the contact form and provide me with more details so I can pinpoint the problem and help you out.

I am sorry to have to say this, but v4c is dying on it’s feet. Some people take a long time to find their way in - others just give up in frustration. Hardly anyone comes to vote anymore and we are losing touch with each other. Chatting is strained because of the time it takes to reload after voting or sending a post.

We used to have a lovely time and learnt a lot from each other concerning causes and other interesting things. We made friends and shared ideas on how to make the world a better place. That, unfortunately is all in the past and it makes me very sad.

  9. CP Says:

Marc, I informed you again via contact form. But I do not have more details. In case I ask the system for a new password I am always told I will receive an email with the new password. But such an email never arrives. I also tried to register new with another email address. But still the same problem, I am not receiving an email with a password.

In the meantime our NRDC supporters are running away because they are bored in our chat room. This server release during a voting period caused really harm to our NRDC cause.

site is soooooo slow to load.
ie: you have to wait one second, takes 10 seconds to get
    the vote click box back.
switching from chat to vote, slow.

    slow!

I would like to know what the minimum is that the winner of each round ‘wins’.
I understand that there are pledges made to the ‘causes’ and I see that you Marc (I believe) donated $10 to FARM, but is that all they got from you, I mean after all those clicks, surly our dedication in voting near constantly for days is worth more then just $10 from this site, do the causes get a percentage of the money generated by the ‘clicks’ for example?
Ps. it would be great to get the avis back!

An interesting discussion about the future of Vote4Cause is going on in the topic before this one => “Vote4Cause Update”
